Tutsan St. John's Wort is perhaps the only Portuguese plant named after a region, where the infusion of its leaves and flowers is considered a natural tranquilizer, as well as being used to treat nervous disorders, insomnia, depression, liver and digestive diseases. Externally, it helps to heal wounds, treat burns, bruises and prevent inflammation.
A perennial plant with a distinctive size and spike, it is widely used as a medicinal plant and is very popular as an antidepressant. In Portugal, it grows spontaneously in damp, shady places and on the banks of the rivers of the Miño, Beiras and Extremadura.
Once crushed, the leaves give off a strong, characteristic smell. The whole aerial part is used as an infusion. Widely used for liver diseases, colic and cystitis. It is an excellent diuretic. It can also be used externally for burns and bruises.
It has no known contraindications or side effects. The infusion can be taken 2-3 times a day. St. John's wort tea is used to treat cases of anxiety and depression, acting as a natural tranquilizer.
