Originally from Peru, this aphrodisiac plant with medicinal properties was cultivated and used by the Incas over 2000 years ago. According to some historical accounts, Maca got its name "Viagra of the Incas" from an ill-conceived experiment by an emperor on his army. The initial aim was to increase the energy of each member of his army in order to promote their energy resistance in the tough battles they would face. However, although they won all of them, the consumption of Maca in their diet contributed to an uncontrolled increase in sexual desire.
The Incas are said to have cultivated Maca in the Andes due to its power to tone the body and fight hunger among isolated populations. In addition to the term "Peruvian Maca", this radish-like tuber is also called Andean Maca, Peruvian Ginseng and Maca-Ginseng. This superfood is recognized for its high amount of essential nutrients that promote physical and mental well-being at various levels. Of these nutrients, the most mentioned are: vitamin C, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, fiber and omega-3. Due to its strong nutritional component, Peruvian Maca is one of the most recommended foods for those who exercise regularly.
With 0% sodium, Maca is an excellent sexual stimulant that can increase libido and fertility in both sexes. Because it contains antioxidant properties, Maca can help increase body energy, reduce anxiety and relieve the symptoms of the menopause and menstruation. It can also help strengthen defenses, improve cognitive functions and moisturize the skin. Maca consumption may help prevent anemia and osteoporosis.
