Peppermint is an aromatic plant from the Lamiaceae family that is the result of the union of two species of the 25 Menthas: Mentha aquatica and Mentha spicata. According to scientific data, the origin of peppermint is still unknown. However, it is thought to have possibly come from England and North Africa. It was in 1696 that the first botanical record of this plant appeared in British territory, where it was used for various purposes due to its high menthol content. In Arab cuisine, it is quite common to mix peppermint with thyme as a spice. This versatile aromatic herb is often used in meat dishes, salads and sweets.
As well as being known as peppermint, this plant can also be called: purple mint, spicy mint and English mint. In terms of its medicinal properties, peppermint tea can help relieve indigestion, vomiting, headaches, muscle tension, fever and menstrual cramps. It can help reduce gastrointestinal gas, treat insomnia and strengthen the body's immunity. It is known for its strong action in eliminating intestinal parasites in children. Thanks to its minty effect, peppermint can help reduce throat irritation by gargling.
Peppermint is digestive, calming, stimulating, antimicrobial, antioxidant and decongestant. According to a study at Newcastle University (England), peppermint contains analgesic properties identical to those of synthetic medicines. It is in this context that its anti-cancer, anti-fungal and analgesic potential is determined.
Learn how to prepare your cold tea: Pour two tablespoons of tea into 1.5 liters of boiled water, leave to cool and then place in the fridge. If you want to add sugar to your tea, you should do so while it's still hot. For a healthier option, add 1 dessert spoon of stevia (don't let it steep for more than 3 minutes as it will make your drink too sweet). You get a wonderful ICE TEA without any added sugars or artificial preservatives.
