Milk thistle, with the scientific name Silybum marianum, is a medicinal plant also known as holy thistle, milk thistle, holy thistle, white thistle and other names. Belonging to the Asteraceae family, this plant is native to Europe and Asia, but has been naturalized in North and South America.
The medicinal properties and benefits of milk thistle have been recognized for over 2,000 years. There are records dating back to the 1st century that indicate the use of this plant by the Romans, as a protective agent for the liver. Milk thistle is recommended for treating jaundice, hepatitis, gallstones, cirrhosis, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, indigestion, diabetes (type two) and cholesterol. Milk thistle is a plant rich in hepatoprotective substances such as silymarin and silybin with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. Of these substances, silymarin stands out, as it is considered to be primarily responsible for regenerating liver cells and stimulating bile. How to prepare:
*Recommended water temperature: 100º
*Infusion time: 3 - 5 minutes (must remain covered).
*Recommended amount: 1 teaspoon of milk thistle per cup (240ml).
