Erva Príncipe (Portugal), capim-limão (Brazil) or Fiá-xalela (São Tomé and Príncipe), also known as capim santo or capim cidreira, is a herbaceous plant from the Poaceae family, native to the tropical regions of Asia, especially India. It grows in a thicket of shoots (cespitose plant), spreading by stolons (therefore called stoloniferous), which have linear-lanceolate amplexicaul leaves. Its inflorescences are made up of yellowish panicles.
Lemongrass helps the digestive system and is calming. Prince's Wort is characterized by its mild lemon flavour.
Lemongrass contains around 70% citral essential oil, which is identical to that found in lemon and orange peel and is full of vitamin A.
It can help combat excessive perspiration and reduce the effects of athlete's foot. You can also use it as an insect repellent. If you suffer from muscle pain or arthritis, you can soak a few compresses in lemongrass tea and apply them to the affected areas. In Suriname (South America), this wonderful herb is used to combat coughs, asthma, headaches and fever. While in the West, it is used as a digestive tonic and a natural calming agent for the nervous system.
