Long pepper(Piper longum), sometimes called Javanese, Indian or Indonesian long pepper, is a plant from the Piperaceae family, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and condiment.
Long pepper is a close relative of Piper nigrum, having a similar taste to the latter, but generally spicier. The Aryans were the first exporters of both types of pepper from the forests of South Asia.
The fruit of the pepper tree consists of many tiny fruits - each similar in size to a poppy seed - embedded in a floral spike that closely resembles the hazel seed. The fruits contain the alkaloid piperine, which contributes to their pungency. Another species of long pepper, Piper retrofracum, is native to the island of Java, Indonesia.
It can be used whole in the same way as a bay leaf, in dishes with broth/liquid. Or it can be ground and used like its relative black pepper.
It is used in Africa, Indonesia and Malaysia added to various spice mixtures.
It is used whole in cooking dishes such as stews or pickles.
It may contain traces of other nuts and soy.
