Horsetail can be popularly called horse-tail, ponytail, field horsetail, foxtail and bottle brush. The scientific name "Equisetum" comes from the combination of the Latin words "equi" (horse) and "setum" (tail). In the 18th century, the use of horsetail was recommended for the treatment of kidney stones. Horsetail stalks are usually used for tea. Because of its aesthetic characteristics, horsetail was often used for ornamental purposes in gardens. With a slightly bitter aroma, this herbaceous plant is thought to have appeared around 600 to 250 million years ago. However, only 20 species of horsetail are still active today.
This medicinal plant thrives in humid environments and is often used near water. If you want to grow it, it is recommended that you monitor its development so that it doesn't become a weed. High in mineral salts, horsetail is a plant that can be used in infusions as a fungus repellent in gardens.
