Cloves have been known for thousands of years for their strong, pungent flavor with a hint of sweetness. Originally from the Moluccas Islands in Indonesia, it was one of the world's most valuable spices for centuries and one of the main reasons why the Portuguese sailed around the world in search of new routes to the Indies.

As well as being a popular spice, cloves have also been used as an herbal medicine for centuries. According to herbalist Denise Luiz, the dried flower buds of the clove tree are very valuable in Chinese medicine and are used to treat nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. But in addition to this, the spice has several other health benefits.

The taste of cloves is very intense and slightly spicy. Its smell is very pronounced and it is rich in essential oils.

Cloves enhance the flavor of sweet and roasted dishes. It gives a special, spicy aroma to meat and fish dishes, as well as game, poultry, potatoes, red cabbage, marinades of all kinds and smoked foods. Chocolates are also delicious thanks to cloves, cinnamon and cardamom. When cooking with cloves, try sticking them in an onion so you can remove them more easily.
