Canela de Velho(Miconia albicans) is a very common medicinal plant in northeastern Brazil and is also known as white-flowered lentil. Its benefits have been studied for some time and, for some people, it is considered a true miracle for fighting arthrosis, arthritis, back pain and joint pain.
1 Improves the pain of arthritis and osteoarthritis
Arthrosis is, quite simply, the ageing of the joints. Osteoarthritis, on the other hand, is the inflammation of these joints. These diseases cause the joints to wear out, causing the bones to rub together. Cinnamomum acts by regenerating the cartilage that lines the bones, reducing the impact and thus easing the pain. The plant also has an antinociceptive action, i.e. it reduces the perception and transmission of stimuli that cause pain.
2. Fights free radicals
Free radicals are all the components that need to be eliminated from our bodies, such as those resulting from stress and poor diet. Canela de Velho acts as a detox in the blood and also in other organs. Because of this action, many people even report an increase in libido.
3. Helps control diabetes
Cinnamon is also very beneficial for diabetics or people who are prone to developing the disease. It's worth remembering that any food containing carbohydrates can increase blood sugar levels, and these foods don't necessarily have to be sweet. The herb helps control blood glucose levels, consequently fighting heart and kidney disease.
4. Aids digestion
The plant has numerous nutrients that help the stomach function properly, improving heartburn, poor digestion, reflux and stomach pains. Canela de Velho also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
5. Slows down the growth of tumors
Contrary to what many sources say, there is still no proof that cinnamon can be linked to a cure for cancer, but there have been reports that the growth rate of some tumors slowed down considerably when the patient ingested Canela de Velho for some time. Some populations that regularly consume Canela de Velho have a reduced rate of cancer cases.
Canela de Velho has many other beneficial effects on the body, such as helping to treat fatty liver, since it has a detox action. The plant also acts against the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease. In other words, it's an ally of good health!
For Canela de Velho to have the expected effect, only the leaves of this plant should be used, as no effects have been observed from its other parts.
Method of preparation:
*Recommended water temperature: 100º
*Infusion time: 5 to 10 minutes (must remain covered).
*Recommended amount: 1 teaspoon of cinnamon per cup (240ml).
*Indicative values which may vary according to personal taste.
